In this week’s soccer tutorial, I’m going to teach you how to play a long ball. This soccer skill will usually be used to make long passes, and is a great ability to have to open up the field (by using a long pass to play the ball into open space).

In order to play a long ball, there are three steps most players should try to master. First, the wind-up. Take a long step and plant your non-kicking foot next to the ball. Bring your kicking foot back up behind you. This will help you develop power on your kick.

The second thing to work on to play a long ball is where you strike the ball. Strike the ball on the bottom half with your laces. Using your laces will give you power, and hitting the ball on the bottom half will force the ball up in the air.

Finally, work on your follow through. Make sure that when you strike the ball, you allow your foot to continue forward through the ball. Continuing your strike through the ball will help generate more power.

Follow these three steps, and you’ll be making great long passes in no time!
