This week’s soccer drill is the 8 cone speed and agility drill. This soccer dribbling drill will help you develop your agility, ball control, and speed. It also helps you practice transitioning from quick, controlled touches to full speed dribbling quickly. In order to do this, you’re going to need 8 cones set up in a line, approximately 2-3 feet apart.

This video contains 3 variations designed to help you maintain control of the ball both while doing quick side to side motions and at a full sprint.

Variation 1 – Shuffle/Dribble/Sprint

Part 1 –

Leave the ball on the ground at the opposite end of the line of cones from where you are starting. Do a diagonal shuffle through the cones without a ball. Try to touch one foot down on the ground between the cones each time you move between them.

Part 2 –

Dribble the ball back through the cones alternating using the inside of one foot and the outside of your other foot.

Part 3 –

At the end of the line of cones, turn around with the ball and sprint back to where you started.

Variation 2 – In and Outs/Slalom/Sprint

Part 1 –

Leave the ball at the other end from where you start. Do in and outs through the line of cones. To do in and outs, start at one end of your line of cones. Take two steps sideways, two steps forward between the cones (so that you’re stepping past the cone line) and two steps back. Continue in this way through the whole line of cones.

Part 2 –

Dribble the ball back through the cones alternating using the inside of one foot and the outside of your other foot.

Part 3 –

At the end of the line of cones, turn around with the ball and sprint back to where you started.

Variation 3 – Slalom to a Sprint

Part 1 –

Start with the ball on one end of the cones. Dribble through the cones alternating between the inside of one foot and the outside of the other. This variation is all about your speed, so try to push yourself to go as fast as you can.

Part 2 –

Turn with the ball and sprint back past where you started. Use this variation to practice your explosive acceleration.
