One of the drills I’ve really been liking recently to develop my ball control is the sideways slalom. The sideways slalom really forces you to be deliberate with your transitions between your left and right foot while maintaining control and balance. A sideways slalom means that you set up a series of cones in a line running left to right, instead of front to back like a normal soccer slalom drill. You then push and pull the ball forward and back through the cones while moving sideways with the ball.

For this particular drill, we’re going to add a forward and back aspect as well. Set up 3 cones in a line, then take about 10 steps forward and set up another cone. Then set up another cone in line with this one about 10-20 steps away, then finally, take 10 steps back and set up another 3 cones.

You’re going to do forward and backs through the first 3 cones, then sprint forward with the ball, then do sideways tick tocks around the next cone, then pullbacks. Do forward and backs through the last 3 cones, then have a shot on goal. I always like to add a shot on goal to help develop your finishing.
